End the Oldies?

Instead of a transfer of leadership, a question we should as is, Is it time to end the Oldies?

The group was started as a means to reduce the frustration that sometimes comes from playing Diplomacy with less mature and reliable younger players.

The Oldies games are always fun, but if we don't feel the need to start an Oldies game more than once a year, is there really a need to maintain the group and the subforum?

Personally, I'm not opposed to the group continuing to exist, but if it's something we don't care about that much, maybe we can live without it.

You know, as an original oldie, and someone who just started playing again after a long hiatus, I wouldn't mind getting an oldie game started up if there was interest. Just let me know.

The best way to gauge interest is to start a game and announce it in the Games Recruiting topic.

As new oldie, it would be great to join a game.

Smacks of euthanasia to me, but then there are worse ways to go.

Are you referring to the question of ending the Oldies group, or sock's and mightyduk's interest in starting a Diplomacy game? ;)

The Results

8 votes cast out of about 200 registered members, 5 in favor of continuing the Oldies group, 3 neutral.

Admittedly, the duties of group leader/moderator are not a huge burden, but if so few players feel the group is beneficial, is there a point in asking anyone to take on that responsibility? Bear in mind that even if the Oldies group is ended, that will have no impact on current Oldies' membership on the Play Diplomacy Online, their ability to continue to play as many or as few Diplomacy games they like, or their ability to arrange games among older players.

I have kicked the decision on what to do with the Oldies group up the stairs to the PDO Forum administrators. I will let you know their decision when I receive their response.

No answer from the admins yet. As with oldies, things move slowly.

The plan of record is to end support of the group on the forum, but cleaning it up is a low priority. Anyone is free to ride to the rescue if they want, but i dont think we need to keep the group if inertia is the only factor in its favor.

If the sole motivation is to clean up the Forum, I suggest this move be delayed and instead be made part of a more wide-ranging clean up. I am sure our little group is not the only one with lower than desired activity.
