Seeking New Blood for Oldies Leadership

Postby Wellington » 11 May 2021, 17:18

Sorry I have been so scarce around here in recent years. Diplomacy is a great game, and there's a lot of great people in the Oldies, but to be honest with myself I don't see myself having any more time for PDO heading into the future (which gets shorter for all of us every day).

I don't know if our other moderator, Crunkus, is active on the site anymore.

Would anyone else like to take over as Oldies group leader and subforum moderator?

I should have spelled out the group leader's duties in my opening post.

Formally, there is not much to do:

  1. Approve members who apply to join the Oldies group. The only screening I do is to check the member's forum profile page for anything interesting he may have posted about himself. I have never rejected an application or removed a member from the group, except when the member has requested it himself (once or twice since the group was formed). The loose qualification of around-forty-and-up is self-policed.
  2. Update the Games Recruiting topic's opening post as status changes.

Other than that, informally the job is what the leader or leaders choose to make of it. I occasionally start Oldies games. In the past I've done more in the forum to drum-up activity in the group. I occasionally field questions from members and prospective members.

It is possible to have two leaders as Crunkus and I have been. The two can back each other up as levels of activity ebb and flow.

I see there are certain posts that are pinned to the top. Is that through a special permission? For website interface on things like that, is it self explanitory or is there a bit of a learning curve? Also is there a list of all Oldies members to maintain?

The power to pin and unpin posts comes with being group leader (technically it comes with being subforum moderator, but for the Oldies group leader and moderator have always been the same people). It has been ages since I have had to pin anything, but I think the web interface is intuitive.

The list of Oldies group members is maintained automatically in phpBB. I get an e-mail when someone applies to join the group. Then I log-on to PDO and go to my User Control Panel to approve.
