Variant Map Bank

Postby Morg » 13 Jun 2013, 23:49

Occasionally I get asked by someone for a Paint.NET map file for a game that I've GMed. I have no problem with sending them the files and I believe most GMs are quite willing to share map files as well. The main trouble is knowing who has what map files. So I'd like to start a Variant Map Bank. This will especially help first time GMs get ahold of map files and get a leg up on understanding layers and Paint.NET in general.

Here we can list GMs and the map files they have on hand.
-These files should be in Paint.NET format (Gimp or Photoshop files are fine, but please specify them as such).
-These files need to be close to 60KBs or less when formatted as a .gif (unless an exception has been made for especially large maps)
-These map files need to be the finished product, not a test map or one that requires a lot of changes in order to be played.

GMs can PM me with the maps they have which meet this criteria to get their maps added to the list.

So I'm slowly gonna be building up this index of maps played here on PlayDip with links to the maps. Emphasis on slowly.

Well. personally I think that a quick PM to a GM requesting a map would suffice for now. It's up to the others too, though.

Thanks for offering :)

I only ask because I have some spare web space, and if it wasn't something people were interested in, I could make a mini-site where I will host all of those files, and one click would download them, rather than having to request them.
Of course this would make them publicly available outside of PlayDiplomacy.com as well, which may or may not be desirable?
What do you think?

A couple MB or so each most likely.

So far, the repetition of games played here is small, so although I like the idea of a repository, I'm not sure how much use it would get that would justify your effort... unless you wanted the collection for your own use.

You should probably check out the Variant Bank that Morg started a week ago.

I don't mind. The offer stands if you all decide it's a good idea.

I had vague memories of this topic, but I couldn't find it again - so I started a map index - maybe instead of me creating a seperate topic for it, you can add the links to this topic?
