Public-Press/Shoutbox: What is allowed and NOT allowed

Postby TheCraw » 30 Jul 2011, 00:48

This thread has been replaced by the rules here: http://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=659&t=43414#p748902

Well, 350 looong-winded shoutboxes later, I have Finally cleared up the back-log of reported inappropriate posts. (The developers created the tool to report problems, but forgot to install a tool so Admins/Mods could SEE the reports!)

So maybe you haven't noticed the writing below the shoutbox SEND button. The warning that reads: (inappropriate content will be deleted)
...or you haven't noticed (or just wondered what the heck is) the click-able red letters below the warning that reads:
report inappropriate

Judging by how many times I saw comments like "Oh no guys, I just clicked 'report inappropriate' by accident! What's gonna happen?!?!" a lot of folks have no idea what it's for.

A) It's NOT for reporting possible cheating.
B) It's NOT for reporting that someone is making fun of you.
C) It's NOT for reporting a mechanical glitch, possible mistakes in the turn-adjudication, or a stuck-game.
...A and C have forums for reporting those issues, and in rare cases PMing the Mods/Admins. (And for B: most sporting good stores sell helmets. Life is hard, buy one.)

This REPORT INAPPROPRIATE thing is for reporting extreme cases of inappropriate language, abuse and/or images.
I guess the next question is... What is "Inappropriate"?

This is the 21st century. We're all flying around in our personal hovercars and eating dinner-in-a-pills, "four-letter-words" are a part of our common language, and censorship is a touchy subject. We accept the fact that "casual obscenities" are going to be used in the shoutbox from time to time. Heck, even I have been known to drop the F-bomb myself.

Common sense should be used when posting in the shoutbox.
Certain things however are clearly unacceptable (even when done anonymously):
~No pornography. Period.
~No racist or homophobic comments or images.
~No threats, be they physical, social or cyber related.
~No Spamming. (be it advertising, or filling the shoutbox with large volumes of nonsense such as posting the same thing over & over)
~No hyperlinks to sites containing pornographic, racist or homophobic content.
~No posting of other people's personal information.
~No posting of screen-shots of your map during FoW games.
~No spurious accusations of cheating. (report honest concerns of cheating to the Forums or a Mod/Admin)

More often than not, reported/discovered inappropriate content will be deleted with little fuss.
Occasionally it will warrant an official "warning".
Extreme cases (such as posting Child Pornography) or repeated offenses: a player may be banned.

Often, it comes down to "what the market can bear". It's up to the players to report offensive postings, and some are more sensitive than others. The final decision however is up to the Mods/Admins.

Management, Administrators and Moderators reserve the right to edit or remove material from Public Press at their sole discretion, and to take appropriate punitive action if necessary.
Members posting in games are held responsible for the content posted. PlayDiplomacy.com provides the medium and is not responsible for the content.

Great! Thanks for doing this. I love the right to express myself. I want others to have that right. If this were expressyourselfanywayyouwantto.com, I would object to censorship, but it is playdiplomacy.com, so I support censorship of material that is widely viewed as offensive. Lots' of work, no doubt.

BTW, when does foul language cross the line? Any guidelines?

Hard to say.
Carlen's original list seems acceptable. And although I frown on the practice personaly, using "Bad Language" to provoke, wind-up, or try and trick someone into doing something rash is within guidelines as acceptable (within reason).

It's when it touches on the list above that it get's dicey.

Personally, if someone wants to say (and I deeply apologize to anyone who reads the examples and is offended):
"Oh... NOW you want to make a deal? You fucking fucker! You fucked up the fucking alliance I was trying to keep together to stop that pile of shit Russia, so go fuck yourself!"
... that's rude of course but it IS (barely) within guidelines.

"You're a Faggot, your so gay!" Suck my cock, you pussy!"
... NOT so OK.

"You're all a bunch of niggers & jews!"
VERY not ok.

And yet, I've seen all those and worse.
(Now I have to go sterilize my keyboard...)

So, Craw face, how many of the 350 shoutboxes legitimately contained inappropriate content, as sepcified by your OP?

I have asked Super_dipsy to "sticky" this post, as it seems to not be getting any notice.

I have had to deleted seven new incorrect reporting of innocent shoutboxes, and shut down one game for deliberate repeated mis-use of this feature.

Please be advised: Dipsy has now added a new feature wherein Admins and Moderators investigating reports of inappropriate content will now be advised of who is doing the reporting. Primarily this is if we need clarification as to what the player finds inappropriate (such as in a game using a language unfamiliar to the investigator), but also: This will enable us to deal with anyone repeatedly "Crying Wolf" as it were.
Continually clicking the button just to annoy an Admin or Mod will result in said player being removed from the game he is doing this in.
