Time for a Rules Change

While it's great to say that "Screenshots can't be trusted. no problem!", that doesn't actually resolve my complaint. Say someone asks me to screenshot a message. My options have been limited extremely far to telling the truth or making up some BS reason I can't screenshot things. That's a massive metagamey hurdle thrown up because I can't Photoshop.

Who needs to be diplomatic when you can just be slightly better with a completely irrelevant piece of software?

It's not a matter of being better with software. It's about learning to find new ways to lie. You don't have to use Photoshop or anything remotely like it to do that.

I think you guys are missing the point. Yes, I am sure you are experts at faking images - and I love the one from Joe! But how do you answer the concerns expressed by condude for example? You all know how to do it, so unsurprisingly you all think it is a great idea to allow it.

There are lots of way to fake images that don't require photoshop or specialized knowledge. It just requires some critical thinking and creativity.

Often, you don't even have to fake an image. You just need to take a snapshot of X and claim it's actually Y. Use similar communication from old games, for instance. Use communication from the same game and just quietly leave out the fact that it happened X years ago.

And keep in mind...I do PbF GM'ing...so I know how to do basics...but this is a whole different level that I personally want to stay away from.

While it's true some people may not have the skill as others to alter an image, is it not the same for anything else? Altering a message or bluffing? Don't we all have different levels of skill at practically everything we do?

If someone says "I don't have the ability to do [insert anything], then either stay in the past and don't do it or adapt and improve your skill. What if I'm not good at altering written messages? Now other players have the advantage since I'm not good at that particular skill. Same goes for bluffing and any other skill used to deceive your opponents or get ahead.

Maybe it's just me but if I know that I'm not good at something then I'd learn or innovate to work a new angle. If you'd prefer not to adapt then don't, but you shouldn't disallow others based on your own personal skill set.

Lying with pictures isn't about being an artist or a programmer. It's about being an illusionist. Sleight of hand is a much smarter tool than changing pixels.

Overall, screenshots and other images can have great utility in a conversation, but they aren't a silver bullet. They're one tool in the toolbox, and they're not even the most important one.
