Surrendering? Versus play it out?

What are your winning tactics? Kill them all?

If surrendering costs you a point, and getting beat costs you nothing, why would anyone ever surrender? :o

I would rather play out a lost cause and get 0, than surrender and get -1. The time saved doesn't seem worth -1.

Am I missing something? :?

I would point out there's also a difference between surrendering, and accepting a draw that doesn't include you. I have surrenders on my record, but they were because of events in "real life" that were going to force me to NMR. I think if there is no chance of winning, finagling your way into a draw, or turning the winners against each other to possibly be a part of a ~new~ winning alliance, one should accept a draw when proposed.

:? :? Did he surrender a bunch? :? :?

He who shall remain un-named had the philosophy that if he wasn't winning he would surrender; if he wasn't interested in the game he would surrender; if he wanted to surrender, he surrendered... including Live games. One of those people you come across and wonder how he'd managed to get his head so far up such a small hole and at such an acute angle...

Still each to his own, I guess

And he's not here anymore, so let's not attack him ;)

There are some occasions where surrendering may be justified, these occasions have already been mentioned here, however they are exceptional circumstances. In general, I hate it when people surrender from a game simply because it's not going the way they had thought it would or because they can't be bothered to continue. When you join a game of Diplomacy then you are committing yourself to a long lasting board game that could quite easily last several weeks, if you really aren't interested in continuing on to the last then don't join it. Simple.

And remember that when you are playing against York. Do not ask him to accept the draw, kill him. He is as tenacious as he is tricky. Kill him quickly, he won't surrender.

And by the way, I'll pile on and say "Don't quit." Really, it skews the game and takes away from the fun for the other players. Sometimes it cannot be helped, but as has been said, it is an exception.

My mistake. I thought if it was on my screen it counted as an ongoing game. Of course if you buy premium you still have no worries!
