my sub auto-surrendered - does that count against me?

Postby rd45 » 04 Jul 2015, 23:30

Hi -
A while ago, when I was under some time pressure, I advertised & got a permanent sub for game no. 97953. That game has just finished. But my sub auto-surrendered on the final move. Didn't make any difference to the result, which was a well-deserved solo for Germany.

But: does my sub's surrender count against my own stats?

Unfortunately, yes.

All I can say is, try to choose your sub more carefully next time.

EDIT: this post was incorrect. See this one instead.

That really sucks. :/

I was grateful enough to get a sub of any sort. It seemed a better solution than bailing out of the game altogether, so I took it. I'm not sure what kind of criteria I could have used to "choose carefully". It's not like I had a whole bunch of volunteers & I could audition them.

Yup, I understand. It's "all I can say"; that doesn't make it very useful. It sucks.

Not sure if this is allowed, but maybe he could try asking for a sub within the Classicist sub forum? Since we're all dedicated to not surrendering, or NMRing, then that sub would probably be a bit more reliable. But like I said, not sure if that's allowed.
I have special eyes.

What I do is as I play games and meet people who seem like good and dedicated players and who I have fun playing with, I slap the friend tag on them here. I've got a few people on the list already who I would PM in the event that I needed a sub.

If you're a premium member, you can also look at their stats for NMRs and surrenders.

Yes. Useful in hindsight. Having used it just the once, my feeling is that the whole "name a substitute" process might need a bit of work.

I looked myself up on the Stats tab, and I'm still showing as having zero surrenders. The game where I named a sub doesn't show as one of my finished games. Exactly where on my record is someone else's surrender staining my reputation?

It will show up as a surrender on your stats when the game finishes (I think)

And yeah, it sucks...sorry that it happened, next time you need a sub, post on the forum for the position early enough to get a couple candidates and then look at their stats.

What game number do you think this happened in?

Doesn't seem to have shown up on my stats, from what I can see, although the game has already finished. Help me out if I'm missing something that's only visible to admins.

It is shown as a surrender on my sub's stats, though - seemingly the first in 40+ games over the past 7 years, so evidently a one-off by an otherwise reliable player - so there would have been no red flags, had I checked in advance.
