FM 2017- The Challenge

Postby sjg11 » 10 Aug 2017, 17:07

Hello people!

Does anyone else have Football Manager 2017? I've been playing it for a few months now, trying to win every top division and cup in every country in the game while working my way up from the bottom tier in each country. Just figured I'd open up a thread for fellow people who own and enjoy the game and to update my progress if people are interested in hearing about it (and maybe to see if a competitor emerges to try to complete the challenge before I can do so).

Anyway, onto the first season of the game from my perspective (details are gonna be sketchy as I've played through a fair few seasons so far):

2016/17
I started my campaign unemployed with Sunday League reputation and the lowest possible coaching badges. I successfully managed to gain a job at Stirling Albion in League Two of Scotland (the fourth tier of Scottish football). As this was my first season on the game there was always the chance that things would go poorly for me and, although they didn't go well, they didn't go as badly as they could have done.

I did, however, resign due to frustration after a 1-1 draw at home to Annan Athletic. We were in mid-table at the time and, in hindsight, if I'd stuck with them I reckon I could easily have reached the play-offs if not even managing to get them promotion. I used a 3-4-3 initially before switching to a 4-2-3-1 after a run of frustrating draws with the 3-4-3. Sadly the frustrating draws remained the case as we often dominated games without actually managing to win them. After I left they snatched a play-off spot but could not get promoted.

Afterwards I stuck with the 4-2-3-1 and went to Truro City in January (in the Conference South), a side who were in the relegation zone at the time. After an encouraging start I managed to get them out of the relegation zone but we couldn't quite fully move away from it and, moving into the last day of the season, I was a point above the relegation zone with a trip to play-off chasing Bishop's Stortford. Sadly their centre-back scored a screamer from 40 yards condemning me to relegation and a sacking. Largely, the squad wasn't good enough and I wasn't given a big enough budget to fix things in half a season. Plus we had an infuriating habit of missing easy chances before making a horrendous error at the other end of the pitch later on. Still, though a bad start to the career.

Below are the final league tables in Scotland and England alongside results for both teams, anything until the 1-1 draw against Annan is me at Stirling and anything from the 3-0 defeat at Weston-Super-Mare is me at Truro.

Season 2017/18
And so I found myself back at square one as I started the game's second season. Fortunately I managed to pick up a job at Tamworth, in the Conference North, with the pre-season aim of finishing in the top-half of the table. I was also given the budget to overhaul the squad, bringing in:
Japhet Mata
Anthony Dwyer
Max Booth
Matt Hall
Leon Dawson
Adam Morgan
Josh Kaye
Jack Rudge
Louis Perry
James Baillie
Lewis Price
Max Harrop
Gavin Rothery
Frantz Tchonang-Ngassa
Lionel Stone

And getting rid of a few players throughout the squad.

After the failure of my 4-2-3-1 at Truro, I decided to switch to a narrow 4-3-3 this season, with these roles:
GK: Sweeper Keeper Defend
LB: Wing-Back Attack
CB: Centre-Back Defend
CB: Centre-Back Defend
RB: Wing-Back Attack
LCM: Deep-Lying Playmaker Support
CM: Ball-Winning Midfielder Support
RCM: Advanced Playmaker Support
LST: Deep-Lying Forward Support
ST: Advanced Forward Support/Attack (varies on the team, at Tamworth it was Support)
RST: Deep-Lying Forward Support

This was an experimental tactic which has served me well throughout the save, although it does need to be allied with a more defensive tactic in order to be truly successful (a flaw which would eventually prove to be my undoing at Tamworth) so you can mix and match if you're playing a tough side, if you're away from home or if you're defending a narrow lead towards the end of a game.

Largely the plan is to have three offensive forwards with two creative midfielders supporting and one defensive midfielder anchoring the side and two full-backs who are as offensive as possible. It's a brilliant offensive tactic but it is flawed and can be countered so it needs to be used carefully. When used in the right situation though it's devastating. During this season, this was the first-choice starting line-up:
GK: Matt Hall (actually still at the club in 2025 (where I am now)
LB: Ellis Deeney
CB: Eddie Oshodi
CB: Luke Jones
RB: Andrew Burns (also still at the club)
LCM: Paul Green
CM: Lewis Price (still at the club)
RCM: Joe Clarke
LST: Japhet Mata (still at the club)
ST: Anthony Dwyer
RST: Ollie Cole

Largely the season was a storming success, as we finished high above our pre-season prediction (10th) to finish third in the league and lose in the play-off semi-finals. Our semi-final was irritating as we levelled the tie on aggregate in the 90th minute only for them to go up the other end of the pitch and snatch promotion from my grasp in injury time. That semi-final shows the positives and the negatives of the 4-3-3 quite well, you'll score lots but you are also potentially vulnerable at the other end of the pitch.

And so I moved onto my second season at Tamworth. Note the dip in results during the second half of the season, that did not go away in 2018/19

This is great; I wonder how you are doing now in 2025?

Thankfully things have improved, but more on that later as it's time for my worst season so far:

2018/19
So, at the end of 2017/18 I was quite content with how things were going at Tamworth. We were playing entertaining football. We were winning more games than we were losing. I felt we had created a solid base to really push for promotion next season, particularly with the additions I made over the summer:
Keiran Murtagh (who replaced Clarke in the midfield)
Marvin McCoy (new right-back)
Alex-Ray Harvey (replacing Green in the midfield)
Garry Kenneth (replacing Oshodi at CB)
Lionel Stone (replacing Jones at CB)
Norman Wabo (back-up striker on loan)
Rhys Davies (young prospect)
Jordan Tunnicliffe (I don't know why I signed him)
Elliot Newby (decent young prospect and a winger if I needed one)

So, the upgrades were meant to improve the squad, leading to me serenely gliding to my first title of the save. Sadly that did not happen. My pre-season target was to finish in the top-half again:
Conference North
Tamworth 2-2 FC United
Altrincham 1-0 Tamworth
Tamworth 1-1 Darlington
Harrogate 1-1 Tamworth
Tamworth 2-1 Redditch
Corby 2-1 Tamworth
Tamworth 0-1 Alfreton
Stockport 4-1 Tamworth
Worcester 1-2 Tamworth
Gainsborough 1-1 Tamworth
Tamworth 2-0 Whitby
Tamworth 1-2 AFC Telford
Tamworth 1-1 Kettering
Salford 3-0 Tamworth
Tamworth 2-0 Stalybridge
Tamworth 1-1 North Ferriby
AFC Fylde 2-3 Tamworth
Nuneaton 2-1 Tamworth
Chester 3-1 Tamworth
Tamworth 2-2 Chorley
Kidderminster 1-2 Tamworth
FC United 0-0 Tamworth
Tamworth 1-2 Altrincham
Tamworth 1-3 Harrogate
Darlington 1-0 Tamworth

FA Cup
Tamworth 1-1 Coalville- Second Qualifying Round
Coalville 2-3 Tamworth

Spennymoor 1-0 Tamworth- Third Qualifying Round

FA Trophy
Tamworth 2-2 Stalybridge- Third Qualifying Round
Stalybridge 2-1 Tamworth

At this point, the board finally lost patience with me, sacking me and replacing me with Tom Cahill. We were 18th at the time and they finished 20th and were relegated (a fate I am convinced they would have avoided had they stuck with me). :
1. Alfreton (Paul Robinson)- 71
2. AFC Fylde (Alex Hay)- 70
3. Salford (Darren Edmondson/Matthew Bubb)- 70
4. Kettering (Marcus Law)- 66
5. Harrogate (Glyn Mason)- 63
6. Corby (Steve Newing)- 62
7. Darlington (Martin Gray)- 61
8. Nuneaton (Kevin Wilson)- 60
9. AFC Telford (Phil Sherwood)- 60
10. Altrincham (Michael Chopra)- 58
11. Gainsborough (Dominic Roma)- 56
12. Stockport (Simon Weaver)- 56
13. FC United (Sylvan Ebanks-Blake)- 54
14. Worcester (Carl Heeley)- 54
15. Redditch (Darren Byfield/Karl Marginson)- 54
16. Stalybridge (Micky Moore/Darren Peacock)- 52
17. Chester (Luke Torjussen/Sam Saunders)- 51
18. Chorley (Matt Jansen)- 50
19. Kidderminster (Gary Finley/Peter Beadle)- 46
20. Tamworth (sjg11/Tom Cahill)- 46
21. Whitby (Chris Hardy)- 43
22. North Ferriby (Steve Housham/Nathan Doyle)- 34

Play-Offs
Harrogate 1-3 AFC Fylde
Kettering 2-3 Salford

AFC Fylde 1-3 Salford

My issues at Tamworth were numerous. Firstly Anthony Dwyer, my main scorer, was injured for five months early on in the season. By the time he had fully recovered I was long gone. My new defensive reinforcements... actually made our defence worse not better and my midfield improvements were merely average. This, combined with the fact that the league had sussed out my tactics by this point, led to an appalling season and my inevitable demise. One positive emerged from the wreckage, the narrow 4-3-3 was fully developed and I was in the process of developing a more defensive formation to work alongside it (more on that later)

So, there I was jobless again (I was sacked in January), having already relegated one side and having contributed to the relegation of another. There was nowhere else for me to go but back up to Scottish League Two, this time to Cowdenbeath, who were adrift in the relegation play-off zone (no automatic relegation) at the time. They were bottom and they were crap. As I was beginning to get a reputation as an appalling manager, we were a perfect fit for each other. I was also desperate to hold onto a job for a while, considering that this was now my fourth job in three seasons. I looked at the squad and managed to bring in a couple of faces:
Connor Scullion (a very good striker for this level)
Aaron Dunsmore (who I think was a CB, no information has survived on him)

My results were as follows:
Cowdenbeath 2-2 Berwick
Cove Rangers 2-5 Cowdenbeath
Cowdenbeath 0-2 Arbroath
Albion Rovers 1-1 Cowdenbeath
Cowdenbeath 3-2 Edinburgh City
Cowdenbeath 0-4 Montrose
Stirling 2-1 Cowdenbeath
Cowdenbeath 0-2 Annan

I now know how Bob Bradley felt... anyway, I actually improved the side (Scullion's goals ended up saving them and he was my signing), we got closer to the sides above us but a new board bought the club and decided that they wanted a change of direction so I was, yet again, sacked. My nice long-term project had lasted... eight games.

Table
1. Montrose (Paul Hegarty)- 64
2. Stirling (Barry Ferguson)- 62
3. Berwick (Gordon Durie)- 61
4. Albion Rovers (Ian Campbell)- 55
5. Arbroath (Colin Nish)- 51
6. Annan (Jim Chapman)- 49
7. Stenhousemuir (Brown Ferguson/Steve Hislop)- 42
8. Cove Rangers (John Sheran)- 38
9. Cowdenbeath (Grant Munro/sjg11/Tony Traynor)- 34
10. Edinburgh City (Gary Jardine)- 33

Edinburgh City ended up surviving through the play-offs, Albion Rovers got promoted through the play-offs.

And so I was facing a fifth job in three seasons. My plan of winning everything was increasingly looking like a forlorn hope. Thankfully, I somehow managed to persuade to poor lemmings at Eastbourne Boro to give me a job. They were fifth in the Conference South and they wanted me to get a play-off spot. As I was already in a play-off spot I was hopeful. As it was March I had no time to bring anyone in so reinforcements would have to wait until the summer. Results:
Eastbourne 0-0 Weston-super-Mare
Eastbourne 3-1 Maidenhead
Kingstonian 0-0 Eastbourne
Eastbourne 1-2 Hemel Hempstead
Welling 0-2 Eastbourne
Eastbourne 1-2 Maidstone

This put me on 63 points in fifth with Dartford and Margate in sixth and seventh on 62 points. A win in my final game at Gosport would see me through safely. For the third season in a row it was a dramatic end to the season.

On 48 minutes, my midfielder Cyrus Yeganeh fired home to put me in front. I did not need to worry about results elsewhere as the play-offs were in sight. Sadly though, in the 90th minute things fell apart, a long ball from then found their striker, Diaz Wright, who fired home to leave me with another injury-time disappointment and having failed to live up to expectations.

Gosport 1-1 Eastbourne

Fortunately the board decided to keep me on for another season despite my failure. At this point my frustration levels were high. Two years in a row my shot at promotion had been ended in injury time and I'd cycled through three jobs in a year. I was on five jobs now in three seasons and I really needed a good year in 2019/20 with Eastbourne.

Table
1. Dulwich Hamlet (Gavin Rose)- 88
2. Maidstone (Chris Hargreaves)- 80
3. Chelmsford (Mick Catlin)- 74
4. Havant and Waterlooville (Jay Devereux)- 68
5. Dartford (Tony Burman)- 65
6. Margate (Neil Hillier)- 65
7. Eastbourne (Kenny Pavey/sjg11)- 64
8. Hemel Hempstead (Paul Holland)- 63
9. Gosport (Alex Pike)- 61
10. Maidenhead (Steve Brown)- 61
11. St. Albans (Ian Allinson)- 59
12. Bishop's Stortford (Mark Hawkes/Gary Finley)- 58
13. Whitehawk (Richard Hill/Dennis Greene)- 58
14. Tonbridge (Lee Bradbury)- 55
15. Welling (Alan Wright)- 55
16. Gloucester (Tim Harris)- 50
17. Hampton and Richmond (Alan Dowson)- 45
18. Oxford City (Bill Prendergast)- 44
19. Weston-super-Mare (Hugo Langton)- 42
20. Dorchester (John Flanagan/Darren Anslow)- 40
21. Kingstonian (Tommy Williams)- 37
22. Hungerford (Bobby Wilkinson/Nikki Bull)- 25

So, things were looking bleak. The good news was that I had just gone through the settling-in period at Eastbourne and my two tactics were now ready to be deployed. The second tactic was a wide 4-3-3 with the following roles:
GK: Sweeper Keeper (Defend)
LB: Full-Back (Automatic)
CB: Centre-Back (Defend)
CB: Centre-Back (Defend)
RB: Full-Back (Automatic)
LCM: Central Midfielder (Defend)
CM: Advanced Playmaker (Attack)
RCM: Central Midfielder (Automatic)
LAM: Winger (Attack)
RAM: Winger (Attack)
ST: Deep-Lying Forward (Attack)

Will sjg finally win something next season? Will he actually be able to keep a job for a full season while performing somewhat respectably? Will his tactics finally click with someone?

Re: FM 2017- The Challenge

2019/20
So I moved onto my first (hopefully) full season at Eastbourne. The board set me the target of reaching the play-offs and I felt that my squad was good enough to get me there if I managed them competently. That of course was a pretty big if.

During the season I brought in numerous players:
Jamie Reynolds
Kolade Salaudeen (brilliant CB for this level)
Tom Youngs
Sam ap Dafydd
Greg Smith
Nigel Roberts
Christopher Larkin
Mark Hitchen
Max Sheaf
Chris Doyle
Chris Millar
Taylor Miles
Peter Skapetis
Darnelle Bailey-King
Matthew Foy
Zachary Birse
Jim Kellermann
Paul Busby
Ephron Mason-Clark
Josh Staunton
Jamie Cumming
Bondz N'Gala
Spencer Forte

My normal formation in the narrow 4-3-3 was as follows:
GK: Elliot Justham
LB: Arinse Uade
LCB: Chris Doyle
RCB: Kolade Salaudeen
RB: Marc Guehi
LCM: Cyrus Yeganeh
CM: Tom Ferry
RCM: Daniel Mandroiu
LST: Marc Rio
ST: Tom Youngs
RST: Peter Skapetis

For the more defensive 4-3-3, Skapetis and Rio were replaced by Josh Koroma (LAM) and Andre Coker (RAM).

And here were the results:
Hemel Hempstead 0-4 Eastbourne
Eastbourne 6-1 Whitehawk
St. Albans 2-3 Eastbourne
Eastbourne 3-0 Gosport
Havant and Waterlooville 1-0 Eastbourne
Eastbourne 1-1 Margate
Weston-super-Mare 1-1 Eastbourne
Eastbourne 3-1 Poole

Eastbourne 2-2 Hemel Hempstead
Eastbourne 2-1 St. Albans
Eastbourne 1-0 Havant and Waterlooville
Whitehawk 1-2 Eastbourne
Gosport 0-0 Eastbourne

Eastbourne 0-3 Bath

Eastbourne 4-1 Hampton and Richmond
Eastbourne 3-1 Bromley
Woking 1-0 Eastbourne
Maidenhead 2-0 Eastbourne
Welling 1-3 Eastbourne
Eastbourne 2-1 Met. Police
Eastbourne 1-0 Dartford

Table
1. Eastbourne (sjg11)- 88
2. Enfield (Brad Quinton)- 74
3. Weston-super-Mare (Hugo Langton)- 73
4. Havant and Waterlooville (Jay Devereux)- 70

20. Welling (Alan Wright/Matt Green)- 40
21. Poole (Mark Burke)- 36
22. Oxford City (Bill Prendergast/Bobby Wilkinson)- 36

Play-Offs
Margate 1-2 Enfield
Havant and Waterlooville p 1-1 Weston-super-Mare

Enfield 1-0 Havant and Waterlooville

Overall, the season was a resounding success (finally!) as we soared to the title, finishing 14 points ahead of Enfield in second (and that was after a late-season blip stopped me from breaking the 90-point mark). At last my squad-building and tactics came together to bring me a successful season. It meant that my journeys through the bottom tier of English football was over (in future I will never have to dip below the Conference National). The season also saw my first Cup run of note as I reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy (knocking out Conference North winners AFC Fylde in the quarter-finals) before succumbing to Conference side Forest Green Rovers,

However, my time at Eastbourne was also over. The New Saints in Wales sacked their manager and I decided to jump ship to Wales. Put simply, at TNS I'd have the biggest budget in the Welsh Premier League which should allow me to knock another league and my first domestic cup off of my list relatively quickly. Still, progress was being made and things were going well. I was hoping to continue my momentum at TNS.
