About

PLAYdiplomacy.com is intended to be a useful supplement to the published game. It is not intended to replace it. A gaming library is a valuable collection that you can derive much pleasure from. There is no way that this site could duplicate the experience of playing a beautifully designed boardgame with friends.

Diplomacy has been published in the United States by Games Research, Avalon Hill, and Hasbro; the name is currently a registered trademark of Hasbro's Avalon Hill division, now owned by Wizards of the Coast. Diplomacy has also been licensed to various companies for publication in other countries.

We strongly urge you to pick up a copy of the original boardgame Diplomacy if you want to play on this website.

Diplomacy was the first commercially published game to be played by mail; only chess, which is in the public domain, saw significant postal play earlier.

Competitive face-to-face Diplomacy tournaments have been held since the 1970s. Play of Diplomacy by e-mail has been widespread since the early 1990s. With the rise of the internet came also the famous Diplomacy judges. This opened up a whole new world of play-by-email.

There were some Diplomacy PC games created as well. Paradox Interactive (Under license from Hasbo) released a computer version in 2005. The initial release had multiplayer functionalities and through an update added chat. However, the system was limited to only real time play through the Paradox web server. AI bugs and server problems combined with the restriction to real time and no further support or updates lead to the decline of it as a viable play alternative.

PLAYdiplomacy.com is designed to be the next step. A fully-developed web version of Diplomacy.

PLAYdiplomacy.com is conceptualized and created by Jan De Volder (Volo Media Ltd) with development by Iulia Scarlatescu and Tudor Panturu (eSol Expert-IT), partly based on the open-source project phpDiplomacy (license information here). We are using an improved version of Diplojuge as Diplomacy adjucator.
